An IDML extension and format file is a native Adobe InDesign file. Its acronym comes from InDesign Markup Language.

This is known as the exchange format. That is, it is a type of file that can be opened in previous versions in which it was created in InDesign.

The IDML format is also very useful so that it can be opened in QuarkXPress, another publication composition program.

IDML files allow predesigned templates in InDesign. Thus, it is certain that anyone can open the files of these templates in an older version.
